Island Life in New York: China-US Cultural Zen Tea Gathering

Long Island, New York — The sea breeze drifts gently by, the setting sun spills across the water like a deep breath taken between heaven and earth. In this quiet moment, we used tea to invite a dialogue between cultures.

It was a sharing of Chinese Zen tea culture, and also a blending of Chinese and American friendship. Friends from different backgrounds gathered—some already familiar with Chinese traditions, others my American neighbors. Before the tea table, everyone set aside their titles, bringing only a curious heart to feel the gentleness of the East.

The fine tea came from Yunnan, because good things are meant to be shared.

We spoke of tea’s history, its etiquette, and the philosophy it carries—slowness, stillness, respect, and harmony. Some listened intently, others nodded in agreement. In that moment, culture was not a barrier, but a bridge.

The tea poured slowly into the cups, steam rising as if time itself had slowed. In the stillness of tea, some closed their eyes, some smiled. Amid New York’s bustle, this moment was a rare pocket of calm. Zen and tea became one, giving the heart a small corner to rest.

Vegetarian dishes were served, light in flavor yet lingering sweetly. Here, what we shared was not only food, but also stories. Someone spoke of their first trip to China; someone else described the taste of home. Laughter and conversation flowed through the air, like culture quietly taking root between us.

Behind it all were my good friend Zora and the brothers from Qiming Meditation Hall, working silently in the kitchen—washing vegetables, chopping with care. They said cooking was not just to fill the stomach, but to express kindness. Every bit of thoughtfulness was a sign of how much this gathering was cherished.

As the sun slowly set, the sound of a young girl’s guzheng and an elderly gentleman’s clarinet rose into the air. Chinese melodies lingered along the American shoreline. For our American friends, the music was enchanting; for our Chinese friends, it was a song of home. The most beautiful thing was not the sunset, but the people watching it together.

That day, we met in the fragrance of tea and parted with smiles. Cultures intertwined, friendships deepened. A refined Zen tea gathering—until next time, when we meet again.
