"Modern Ink: Crossing Media, Blending Cultures" Exhibition to Open in New York

From February 5 to March 29, 2026, the modern ink art exhibition Modern Ink: Crossing Media, Blending Cultures will be held at the Culture Lab LIC art space in Long Island City, New York (address: 5-25 46th Ave, Long Island City, NY). This exhibition aims to explore the infinite possibilities of ink, an ancient Eastern artistic medium, within the context of contemporary globalization, showcasing its vibrant potential to transcend cultural boundaries and integrate diverse disciplines.

Curated by renowned curator Ethan Cohen, the exhibition brings together five exceptional artists who delve deeply into ink expression across different cultural backgrounds and artistic practices: Li Geng, Wang Houtang, Gan Yu, Qin Feng, and Bian Hong (listed in order of age). Their works will break the established frameworks of traditional ink art, presenting ink in entirely new dimensions of form, concept, and cultural dialogue through various media such as painting, installation, and video.

It is worth noting that one of the featured artists, Mr. Wang Houtang, has gained international recognition for his unique Kung Fu Ink art. Born in 1952, he began practicing calligraphy and martial arts from a young age, seamlessly blending the spirit and dynamism of Chinese calligraphy with the power of martial arts to create a distinctive writing style and aesthetic realm. His participation will undoubtedly infuse the exhibition with profound traditional roots and powerful innovative energy, vividly interpreting the Eastern philosophy of "the fusion of culture and martial arts." In line with Mr. Wang Houtang’s longstanding vision, this exhibition aspires to serve as a bridge, bringing the profound and dynamic essence of traditional Chinese culture to a broader international stage and fostering deeper understanding and appreciation across cultures.

The exhibition will commence with an opening reception on February 5, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, inviting guests from all walks of life to witness the launch of this artistic celebration. Additionally, to deepen academic exchange, an Artists’ Talk and Panel Discussion will be held on February 21 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, hosted by Tess Howsam and Dr. Gan Yu, where the artists will share their creative philosophies and practical insights.

This exhibition is sponsored by Kung Fu Ink, ink 功夫墨社, an organization dedicated to promoting contemporary Chinese ink art, and organized by Culture Lab LIC. We look forward to the Modern Ink exhibition, where audiences can not only appreciate the diverse faces of ink art in the contemporary era but also experience the inspirational collisions and infinite possibilities brought about by cultural convergence. Let us embrace this artistic journey that transcends media and bridges East and West with an open mind.
